GOOD NEWS!

We have secured a location at 11 Hawthorne Street in Providence, RI 02907.  We  now have an address where people can drop off computer equipment that we can recycle and put in the hands of nonprofits and individuals who can use them. We now have class room space to teach people how to use computers and how to repair computers.

We Still Need  Your  Help!

Our goal is to be self-sufficient but now, we still need your help. your donation will give us the time to develop other revenue sources and take the next step as an organization.

If you have seen and believe in the difference a computer can make in the life of a child, an out of work parent, or a friend trying to make it through school, please show your support for Free Geek Providence today with a donation of $25, $50 or $100 dollars.

As you may know,  Johnson & Wales University has been very generous in allowing us to use space at their facility on Harborside Campus to process outgoing donations to organizations .

The “cage” at JWU transformed us as an organization.  We went from a group of motivated individuals, to an organization that has donated over 500 computers to organizations and individuals that might not otherwise have them.

We now know we are losing the space at JWU, and we will need to move out the first week of April.  In order to cover moving expenses, rent, and insurance, we need to raise $4000 in the next few weeks.

Free Geek Providence can remain a viable organization and grow to offer more services, but only with your help.

Move in by May Campaign

How many times has this happened to you? You tell someone about Free Geek Providence, our mission to get usable computers into the hands of people that can use them, and they say ‘ I have a computer(s) that you could have’. It happens to me all the time.

When we formed Free Geek Providence two years ago we wanted to be able to take every computer offered to us and figure out what could be put to use and responsibly recycle everything else. We didn’t want to add anything to a landfill or to send it overseas to pollute someone else’s backyard.

Since starting we have accomplished that goal. We have put over 500 working computers into the hands of nonprofits, schools and individuals who can use them. We have put together a curriculum used in the Central Falls High School and hosted three Newbcamps to share technology skills. Our greatest achievement has been to create a community of knowledgeable, passionate volunteers who are committed to this mission. But we need your help.

We could be doing more. Simply put, not having our own space limits our abilities to pursue our mission and grow as an organization. We can’t accept all of the equipment that is offered to us because we don’t have any place for it. We need your financial support to help us move into new quarters by May.

With a location of our own we could:

  • have a place where people drop off and pick up equipment
  • set up our own thrift store where people could buy good, inexpensive computers
  • have software and hardware trainings for our volunteers and the public
  • offer free Internet access and printing service to the public
  • hold regular meetings (and not have to worry if the coffee shop was going to have enough space)

Once in a location of our own we will be able to draw in more people and resources to grow and fund our organization.

We need  to raise $8,000 to move into a location of our own by May 2011, your donation of $25, $50, $100 dollars will help us to reach that goal  and make  Free Geek Providence’s Move in by May Campaign a success.
